Cherry Blossom Festival D.C.
CherryBlossom Festival D.C 2015, starts on March 20th and runs through April 12. The peak
bloom for the fluttering pink and white blossoms are expected around April 11
and April 14.
The history of the cherry blossoms
In
1912, Tokyo gave 3,000 trees as a gift to the nation's its sister capital
Washington, DC. The National Cherry Blossom Festival has grown into one of the
world’s biggest celebrations of Sakura and Japanese culture. It starts
with a free art tour and the festival includes the kite festival, a ten mile
run, fantastic parade down Constitution Avenue and more.
The first
festival was launched 20 years later
In 1935, D.C. government and
civic groups organized the first "Cherry Blossom Festival." A
three-day celebration in 1934 and a 1927 re-enactment of the original planting
of the trees by a group of Washington school children was the first official
festival.
The original
trees that were planted
There were 12 different varieties
of the huge trees, mainly snowy Yoshinos and Kwanzan, are arranged along
Potomac Park and round the Tidal Basin.
Take in the
scenery
Running in the 10 mile run,
riding in the paddleboats or evening lantern walk are great ways to enjoy and
experience the Cherry Blossoms.
